The Rules of Tennis Have Changed!

According to a new release, the USTA has passed new rules governing competition for 10-and-under tennis tournaments and will take effect on January 1, 2012. The new rules require that 10-and-under tournaments be played using slower-moving and lower-bouncing balls, on smaller courts and utilizing shorter, lighter racquets.

Watch this video to see why the rule change is much needed for kids!

"Scaling tennis down to the size of children will promote greater participation and ensure that young kids will be able to play tennis much more quickly," says Kurt Kamperman, Chief Executive, Community Tennis, USTA. "This rule change to the competition format for kids 10 and under is critical to the long-term growth of our sport, and ultimately will help us develop new generations of players and champions."

With the smaller courts, lower-bouncing balls and smaller racquets designed for those 10 and under and used in the QuickStart Tennis play format, kids are able to rally and play the game early on. That makes tennis fun and increases the likelihood that kids will come back to play again and again, improving their skills with each trip to their local court.

Meet Our Owner Dale!

Hello Sport Court So. Cal Followers!

We would like to introduce you to our owner, Dale Hendrickson…

Dale's Mugshot... he is usually smiling!
Dale has been a part of the Sport Court family since 1987.

Dale’s favorite job worked on was his own backyard. He designed the court, putting green, and artificial turf placement himself. His court was actually filmed and featured on Discovery Channel's Backyard Brigade.

Dale enjoys his very own 35’ x 73’ Sport Court Full Game Court. You will regularly see the entire family and church youth playing basketball and badminton in his backyard.

He is a college football maniac! Other hobbies that Dale has are water sports, mountain vacations, playing ping pong & badminton, reading and watching movies. He loves spending time doing anything with his wife and family.

Dale’s considers Gordon B. Hinckley a hero because he is a man of deep spiritual strength and character. Hinckley is a fine example of commitment, honor, tradition, family, humility, and most of all love. Dale also finds his dad to be a personal hero because he was very accomplished, but was easy going and lived a happy, simple life.

Dale is a child of God, loving husband, devoted father, traditionalist, conservative, republican, brother, son, friend, athlete, Sport Court guy, nice guy… in that order.

Around the office he is known as the jokester and “life of the party.” You will always find him with a cheerful attitude and welcoming to everyone that steps through his doors.

Increase in Basketball Head Trauma Accidents from Hard Courts

Kiss the "boo-boos" better & that concrete court goodbye!

Back when we would run on the “black-top” or concrete at recess, it was a normal event to have one of your friends slip, fall, or skin their knees on the concrete.

Concrete is probably the only surface that you might NOT want to use today. For two main reasons...

1) Concrete is just like the sidewalk, it’s the hardest surface you can play on and over time can cause foot, ankle or knee pain and even shin splits. [It’s 15 times harder than dirt/grass!]

2) Concrete will tear up your outdoor basketball faster than any other surface. Even the pure outdoor balls will have less of a lifespan than if you play on asphalt or another surface.

A recent study featured on CNN Health says that the number of traumatic brain injuries have increased in young basketball players. The article, written by Rachel Rettner, notes that basketball-related traumatic brain injury has increased 70% over the last ten years. Hospital records have proven that brain injury cases increased from 7,030 in 1997 to 11,948 in 2007.

Traumatic brain injuries were most common among elementary aged children (ages 5 to 10), with 375,350 average injuries per year. Also, the study did not include patients who were treated outside of emergency rooms, so the overall number of basketball related injuries is probably greater.

Sport Court surfaces have been tested and certified to be the safest court surface to play on! Using the ASTM F1292 (the leading standard for Impact Attenuation of Surface Systems) our product PowerGame earned a 25” safety fall height. This is far safer for children than concrete that has a measurement of 2”!

In the event that someone would fall while playing basketball running on any Sport Court surface, it is dual layer system facilitates non-abrasive and minimal static friction.

Regardless of the level of play, athletes of all ages will enjoy the benefits of Sport Court competitive performance and safety at an affordable price!

Side Yard Projects!

Some people think that they don't have enough room in their backyard for something from Sport Court. However, look at what you can do with the side of your house! Transformed from just dirt to a beautiful putting green!

Sport Court of Southern California provides surface for Pitch:Africa

Africa is faced with many challenges. Some of the biggest problems are:

• lack of clean water


• 20' storage containers littering the land


• need for establishments for schools, meeting halls, markets, clinics, and soccer venues!

The solution? To build soccer venues on top of 32 storage containers. The venues will be created in a way that rain will be able to go through the soccer field and collect inside the storage containers, now being used as cisterns.

From here the water will be able to be filtered and be able to be used for drinking, cooking, washing, and farming. Not to mention a great place for soccer! And storage containers without water can be used as classrooms!

HOW WAS SPORT COURT INVOLVED?

Pitch Africa was in need of a surface for their model venue in Los Angeles. They gave Sport Court a call and they were set up with this beautiful blue court! The court has a pores design and is a modular cushioned suspended safety surface.

Sport Court of Southern California has been in the Synthetic Grass System business since 2001. Our beautiful greens would be perfect in any residential or commercial location! They look great in backyards, frontyards, playgrounds, picnic areas, parks and so much more!
